Nineteen

Netta honestly didn’t know if she should laugh or be terrified. Danny had been lecturing her about breaking into people’s homes since her first case. And now he was asking her to do it as a favor. He must either be desperate or have lost his mind.

She knew, without Danny telling her, that Murphy was not under arrest which meant that he could leave the police station at any time. She needed to hurry.

“Justine, Danny just asked me to break into Murphy’s apartment to look for a gun. Can you hold down the fort for me?” Netta asked.

Justine protested.

“I don’t believe you.”

“I promise that I will show you the text messages when I get back. Right now, I have to get going,” Netta said.

She hurried over to Murphy’s apartment and used magic to unlock his door. As soon as she stepped inside, she almost turned around and left. There was trash everywhere. Half-eaten food lay all over the place, and there was a pile of dirty dishes in the sink. She almost gagged when she saw a cockroach so big that she could probably throw a saddle on it and ride it away into the sunset.

However, she had a job to do, so she gritted her teeth and walked in, careful to close and lock the door behind her.

She had no idea where to search for the gun. The apartment was so nasty it offered dozens, maybe hundreds, of excellent hidey holes. He could just tuck the gun under the plate full of dried out hamburger macaroni mix that sat on the sofa, or shove it into the pile of wadded up, stained paper towels on the hallway floor.

She wrestled down her nausea and considered, ultimately deciding that if Murphy bought the gun for protection, it would likely be in his bedroom. She looked through his drawers. All she found in the first one was stained underwear. The second revealed socks full of holes, the third, wrinkled T-shirts.

All sorts of ick, but no gun. She checked beneath the mattress, under his pillows, in his nightstand. The only thing that Netta found were skittery black bugs that seemed annoyed to be disturbed. She figured it would take her a month’s worth of showers just to feel clean again.

That left the closet. If the rest of his house was bad enough to give her nightmares, she had no idea what horrors she might find in his closet.

Taking a deep breath, she forced herself to walk over to the small door across from his bed. Grateful that she was wearing gloves, she gingerly turned the knob and peered inside. A foul smell washed over her. She swore it came out in a cloud of green vapor. It smelled like some kind of monster foot fungus.

“Danny is going to owe me big time for this one,” she muttered to herself.

She dug through a bunch of dirty clothes piled on the closet floor and several old shoeboxes. She didn’t find anything but a stomachache. Then, just as she was about to give up, she dug a tentative hand into a very old and stinky tennis shoe.
